My Bitcoin to Monero Swap Experience with ChangeNOW

Thinking of swapping crypto? I share my real-world experience from November 2025, detailing my research & a smooth crypto swap using ChangeNOW. Learn from my journey!

Today is November 7th, 2025, and I’ve been actively involved in cryptocurrency for about five years now. I’ve always been interested in privacy coins, and Monero (XMR) has consistently stood out to me. Recently, I decided to diversify my portfolio and increase my XMR holdings, so I undertook a Bitcoin (BTC) to XMR swap. I wanted to share my experience, as it wasn’t always straightforward.

Why I Chose to Swap

I initially held a significant amount of Bitcoin, and while I believe in its long-term potential, I wanted to allocate some funds to a coin with stronger privacy features. Monero’s ring signatures and stealth addresses offer a level of anonymity that Bitcoin doesn’t inherently provide. Plus, I’d been reading about increased interest in privacy coins, especially given some recent security events involving large Bitcoin thefts – I read online that a theft of 3,520 Bitcoin actually caused a rally in Monero!

The Research Phase

Before diving in, I spent a good amount of time researching the best way to perform the swap. I quickly realized there were several options: centralized exchanges, decentralized exchanges (DEXs), and peer-to-peer platforms. I quickly ruled out DEXs because, honestly, the gas fees were astronomical, and I wasn’t comfortable with the complexity. I also hesitated with centralized exchanges, as they often require KYC (Know Your Customer) verification, which defeats some of the purpose of moving to a privacy coin like Monero.

I found a lot of information online about the current BTC to XMR exchange rate. It fluctuated, but around the time I did the swap, it was hovering around 290 XMR per 1 BTC. I saw reports that it had changed by about 0.12% in the last 24 hours, so timing was a consideration.

My Chosen Platform: ChangeNOW

Ultimately, I decided to use ChangeNOW. I’d heard good things about their non-custodial service – meaning they don’t hold your funds – and their relatively quick exchange times. I also appreciated that they didn’t seem to have limits on the amount I could swap, which was important as I was moving a decent amount of BTC. I did read that some platforms have hidden fees, so I was careful to check ChangeNOW’s fee structure before proceeding.

The Swap Process – Step-by-Step

  1. Choosing the Pair: I selected Bitcoin (BTC) as the “You send” currency and Monero (XMR) as the “You get” currency. The interface was pretty intuitive.
  2. Entering the Recipient Address: This was the most crucial step. I carefully generated a new Monero address using my official Monero GUI wallet (I always recommend using the official wallet!). I double-checked, then triple-checked the address for accuracy. A single mistake here could mean losing my funds forever.
  3. Comparing Rates: ChangeNOW showed me a few different providers with varying exchange rates. I chose the one that offered the most favorable rate at the time.
  4. Confirming the Transaction: I reviewed all the details – the amount of BTC I was sending, the estimated amount of XMR I would receive, and the ChangeNOW address to send the BTC to.
  5. Sending the Bitcoin: I initiated the Bitcoin transaction from my hardware wallet (Ledger Nano X). I made sure to set a reasonable transaction fee to ensure a timely confirmation.
  6. Waiting for Confirmation: This was the most nerve-wracking part! I monitored the Bitcoin blockchain using a block explorer to track the transaction’s progress. It took about 45 minutes for the transaction to confirm, which was within the estimated timeframe.
  7. Receiving the Monero: Once the BTC transaction was confirmed, ChangeNOW automatically sent the XMR to the address I provided. I checked my Monero wallet, and within about 15 minutes, the XMR appeared!

Lessons Learned

I did encounter a small hiccup. Initially, the estimated exchange rate on ChangeNOW seemed slightly off compared to what I saw on CoinMarketCap. I contacted their support (they have 24/7 live support, which was reassuring), and they explained that the rate fluctuates constantly and the displayed rate is an estimate. They were very helpful and clarified everything.

I also realized the importance of using a secure Monero wallet. I opted for the official GUI wallet and made sure to back up my seed phrase securely. I also learned that there are multiple ways to acquire Monero, like mining or working in exchange for it, but swapping BTC seemed the most efficient for me.

Final Thoughts

Overall, my BTC to XMR swap experience with ChangeNOW was positive. It was relatively quick, secure, and straightforward. I’m now happily holding Monero and feel more confident in my portfolio’s privacy. I would definitely recommend this process to others, but emphasize the importance of careful research, address verification, and using secure wallets. It’s a bit more involved than simply holding Bitcoin, but the added privacy is worth the effort, in my opinion.
